Ululate kikiza in Zulu, is a hysterical cry of excitement by women, it is originated from Nguni people i.e. Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi, and Ndebele. Ululation is sung during traditional ceremonies where the atmosphere is electric.
Ululation was done to invite nearby and far away neighbours to come and celebrate together when modern medium of communication was not available. It is sung by women because their voices are louder than men.
Zulu people would be invited through ululation and trails of smoke from the homestead to join traditional ceremonies despite familiarities.
Ululation would be sung and echoed through the valleys and mountains to reach mass of people situated far away.
